My experience buying a Diamond Engagement Ring

I bought my diamond engagement ring from Varoujan in Sydney. This story is about my experience buying the diamond engagement ring. When I decided to propose to by then girlfriend, I asked my friend, who has just proposed to his girlfriend, which diamond jeweller he recommends. My friend has spent the last six month checking a lot of the diamond jewellers in Sydney so I knew the diamond jeweller that he ends up buying his diamond engagement ring was worthy.

My friend recommended Varoujan jewellers in Sydney and scheduled an appointment with the owner Varoujan. I was a bit nervous going to meet Varoujan as I knew nothing about diamonds or diamond engagement ring, except that I needed to buy one. I was worried this diamond jeweller might take advantage of my ignorance and push me to buy something expensive.

It turned out my worry was unnecessary. Varoujan was very patient and helpful. As soon as I told him I knew nothing about diamonds or the process of buying a diamond engagement ring, he started to educate me first,  explaining about the four Cs of a diamond, being the

  1. Carat
  2. Clarity
  3. Colour
  4. Cut

Varoujan even bought out the different diamonds he has so I can see what a diamond carat is as well as show me the different diamond shape. Finally we talked about the engagement ring itself. By the end of the session, I was convinced that Varoujan was the right diamond jeweller for me. He made me feel very comfortable, guided me but not in a pushy way and made sure I was able to make an informed decision in the purchase of my diamond engagement ring.

My friend bought a point 8 carat diamond princess engagement ring and I decided on a  point 7 carat round cut diamond engagement ring housed in a white gold ring with four claws. The white gold ring has a very thin profile because my girlfriend has very small finger.

Apart from the point 7 carat diamond size, I also wanted the diamond colour to be D, which is the best diamond colour you can get. I wasn’t too fussy about the clarity or cut of the diamond as I had a limited budget. Varoujan said he will come back to me with a price once he sourced a point 7 carat diamond with D colour and let me know what clarity and cut are available.

At the end of the appointment, I walked out of Varoujan’s shop feeling not only very happy with my diamond engagement ring purchase but also very educated. Varoujan rang me a few days later and quote me a price below my budget, which I was happy with. A week later I was the happy owner of a beautiful diamond engagement ring that I know my girlfriend would say is perfect.

And “perfect” did she say about the engagement ring along with “Yes” when I proposed to her. The white gold ring was beautifully proportionate in her small hand and in fact the point 7 carat diamond looks impressively big in her small hand.

Since I had to keep the proposal a secret, I had to guess her ring size and I was close but not perfect so after my proposal, my now fiancé and I visited my favourite diamond jeweller again to get the ring made smaller. Varoujan after-sale service was just as good as his pre-sale service. He took time to measure the right ring size and made sure the resizing was done very quickly because my fiancé was very eager to be wearing it.

If anyone wants to buy a diamond engagement ring, I highly recommend Varoujan Jewellers, his website is www.varoujan.com.au and tell him Minh referred you :)
